As a dancer, I am rooted in improvisation with an orientation towards touch, image and sensation. My introductions to somatic approaches such as Body Mind Centering (BMC), Skinner releasing, Authentic Movement and Experiential Anatomy came via years studying and practicing Contact Improvisation (CI).
CI is complimentary to SE because they both rely on 'tracking' awareness of bodily experience. In SE, subtle ‘micro-movements’ can indicate latent movement organisations whose expressions can help to release bodily held trauma.
From my arts background, I bring to SE a rigorous understanding of movement, presence, imagery, and creative tools to access to what can be difficult to express through language alone.
My focus shifted towards understanding trauma and nervous system functioning whilst developing arts projects in relation to intergenerational trauma and systemic racism.
I am committed to developing practices that move towards collective healing and liberation. Towards that aim, I have completed Kesha Fikes' Somatic Extimacy process.
